Exercises in Context

Practise grammar and vocabulary through authentic gap-fill exercises drawn from real-world texts and everyday language use.

What are Exercises in Context?

Traditional language exercises often drill isolated rules in artificial sentences. Exercises in context embed the target language inside meaningful texts — news extracts, conversations, stories, and more — so that learners encounter grammar and vocabulary the way they naturally occur.

Each exercise on this site is a gap-fill (cloze) exercise: words or phrases have been removed from a passage, and learners must supply the correct form. Exercises are organised into two broad categories:

  • Grammar – verb tenses, aspect, particles, measure words, sentence patterns, and more.
  • Vocabulary – collocations, idioms, topic-based word sets, synonyms, and word formation.

Why Gap-Fill Exercises?

Gap-fill exercises require active recall rather than passive recognition. By retrieving the correct word or form in context, learners consolidate their understanding of how grammar and vocabulary actually work in connected text — a proven method for building lasting language proficiency.
