The Dative Case

 
Question 1: Using Dative Case Articles: Definite and Indefinite

The missing definite and indefinite articles below are all in the dative case. Type in the correct forms with help of the table. The nouns are colour-coded: masculine | feminine | neuter | plural.

 

(a) In Gästezimmer gibt es ein Doppelbett. - In the guest room (spare room), there's a double bed.

(b) Wir wohnen in großen Stadt, aber ich möchte eines Tages auf Land wohnen. - We live in a big city but I'd like to live in the country one day.

(c) In Bibliothek gibt es nicht nur Bücher, sondern auch Computer, Brettspiele und DVDs. - In the library there are not only books but also computers, board games and DVDs.

(d) Der junge Mann hilft  alten Mann aus  Jacke. - The young man is helping the old man out of his coat.

(e) Der vietnamesische Koch kocht Rindfleisch und Bohnen in Wok. - The Vietnamese cook is cooking beef and beans in a wok.

(f) Die freundliche Lehrerin gibt  Schülern und Schülerinnen immer einen guten Ratschlag: "In Ferien solltet ihr Spaß haben und keine Hausaufgaben machen!" - The kind teacher always gives the students a good piece of advice: "In the holidays, you should have fun and not do any homework!"

Question 2: About the Dative Case
• The indirect subject of any sentence is in the dative case.

• This case is particularly important for describing the position of people and objects.

• It is also used with many important verbs, including helfen (to help) and geben (to give).

• The dative case is always required after these prepositions: aus, außer, bei, gegenüber, mit, nach, seit, von and zu.

TASK: In the sentences below, select N for words and phrases in the nominative case and D for words or phrases in the dative case.
